2:34 pm - REC: Rules of Being a Godson by Sam Vimes

sahiya
For anyone else as traumatized as I was, I give you copperbadge's "Rules of Being a Godson"

It's pretty spoilerific for Deathly Hallows, so the whole rec is going under a cut.Collapse )

3:24 pm - The O.C: In Loco

shoshannagold
In Loco by Dira Sudis
The O.C., Seth/Ryan (NC-17 - kink)
"Seth is a junkie, and Seth is a hustler."

This piece just knocked me off my feet. It's AU (although judging by the way the series is going, who knows!?) and set in an indeterminate time, but in a universe in which things have gone very wrong for the boys. Seth and Ryan have become the worst possible version of themselves, but in the most perfect way. Seth is all open wounds and selfishness, but with an edge of desperate need that makes him not only forgivable, but perhaps ultimately redeemable. Ryan is hard and tough, but still wary and protective, taking care of Seth in a way that at first seems cruel, but as the story goes on it becomes clear that not only is it necessary, it's actually loving.

"Seth opens and closes his hands, fists clenching, fingers scrabbling, but it doesn't matter, he's held fast, by the rope Ryan tied and by Ryan himself, looking down at Seth impassively. Seth can't do anything to anyone now."

current mood: impressed

Standing in the Common Spaces
by seperis
Smallville/Spider-Man movieverse
NC-17
slash: Peter/Lex, Lex/Clark inklings
Summary: It's instant, like the click of a camera, a moment out of time captured and preserved. Even if he doesn't know why until now.

This is long and *fantastic*. Peter is so well done, and seeing Lex and Clark through his eyes allows for excellent insights into both men. The parallels between Peter and Harry and Lex and Clark are explored beautifully, painfully, wonderfully.

Dark is Rising

Summary: 'You're good at leading people.'

This Bran makes *sense*; I can really see this as a slice of his future. A scene that's palpably tense and awkward and very well done.

Harry/Hermione
Summary: He kissed her then, as he always did, and her arms snaked around his neck and for a moment, she was fine.

It's all angsty and wah and beautiful and I love it.

Summary: Cosmic rules cannot be overridden. Or so they say.

This story made me so happy. So many of my favorite characters (Susan, the Patrician, Death) all together! Susan vs the Patrican was a delight, and I loved the look at Susan's relationship with Time.

This was one of those that just left me incoherent because it felt so *right.*

Walsingham's Christmas Carol
by psychomachia
Dark Is Rising
PG

Summary: Christmas is the time for telling tales. Not all of them can end well.

A past-time fic that's very, very well done. I was drawn in by the voice, which is *wonderful*, and the sense of foreboding kept me there right til the end.

Title: Wesley's Liberal Guilt
Author: Jessica Harris
Fandom: Angel
Pairing: Wesley/Gunn
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Wesley has Major Issues. Gunn is alternately annoyed and amused.

Wow, it's been a long time. Almost a year, actually. That's sad.

But this is a good fic for me to come back on. It's funny and smart and it has a social conscience (well, kinda), and a very, very English Wesley. And a Gunn who is very . . . Gunn. It's all about Wesley second-guessing himself and Gunn cuffing him upside the head. Literally and figuratively. And then they have sex. The end. :-)

Your Friends and Neighbors by thetreacletart.
Harry Potter. R. Ron/Harry/Hermione.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione move into a new neighborhood. Someone is watching them closely.

I *really* liked this story. All three of the Trio were very well characterized, and the neighbor's characterization was nice and eerie and a very good counterpoint to Harry's. This story has a Twilight-Zone feel, and while I sort of saw the ending coming I couldn't look away until I got there.

Title: The Winter Glass
Author: luminousmarble
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Harry/Ginny
Summary: Harry must read the compass of his heart to solve the only riddle the wizard of the north cannot fathom. How far must one walk to reach eternity? Chamber of Secrets transformed by H.C. Andersen's "The Snow Queen."

The word that comes to mind is 'oooh.' I love this, love the way this story feels, dreamy yet real enough to see. The HP characterizations are strong and true, the canons are blended down to tiny details, and the ending absolutely made my afternoon.

12:01 pm - Ocean's Eleven!

Title: trading in your own name
Fandom: Ocean's Eleven
Author: Gale
Rating: R
Pairing: Rusty/Linus
Summary: And the most important thing to remember is, don’t ever—

Ocean's Eleven is one of the slashiest movies ever, but for some reason the fandom never took off. Sometimes that happens to movie fandoms, but the news of the sequel stirred new life into the fans, and some great stuff has finally come up. trading in your own name is Linus' pov, and a really great development of that character's back story. The author has an economy of tone that sets off the humour in the story well. The best love stories are those than are told without a surplus of emotion in the prose, that let the characters speak for themselves, and this is a fantastic example of such a story.

Title: Drive
Fandom: Ocean's Eleven
Author: Jess
Rating: I'd say PG-13
Pairing: Rusty/Linus
Summary: " Sometimes he just misses having someone else to change the radio stations and run into the convenience store for drinks. Most of all he just doesn't like being alone."

Everything I said about the last fic applies to this one. Beautiful writing, funny characters, great love story. This is Rusty's pov, and the characterization is amazing. The two stories, though written by different people, fit together so well. These are guys who live just a bit outside the normal bounds of society in a way that is both charming and elegant, and I want more of both of them.

Title: Dark Horses and Vague Misconceptions
Fandom: Harry Potter
Author: hackthis
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Ron/Neville, Ron/Hermione, Ron/Harry
Summary: If Ron were ever to actually fancy another bloke he’s fairly certain that he would have to fancy Harry.

*snerk* Ron's denial is just priceless, here. He's straight, of course he is, and if he wasn't it would have to be Harry, so why is he with Neville in this broom closet? It's the Ron POV that makes this fic, and it's a joy, sure to leave you smiling.

Title: Remembering Amnesia
Fandom: Angel
Author: untrue_accounts
Rating: R
Pairing: Wesley/Fred, Wesley/Lilah
Summary: Wesley, post-Lineage. He doesn't think car, freeway, north any more than a bird fleeing winter thinks of longitude and latitude.

Wesley takes a trip back to Sunnydale, and it's so lovely and painful and right.

It began here. He thinks it began here. The first time he held a weapon in his hands, and knew what to do with it. The first time he helped save the world. The first time he lost everything, and broke, and put--something together out of the pieces.
