2:34 pm - REC: Rules of Being a Godson by Sam Vimes

sahiya
For anyone else as traumatized as I was, I give you copperbadge's "Rules of Being a Godson"

It's pretty spoilerific for Deathly Hallows, so the whole rec is going under a cut.Collapse )

3:24 pm - The O.C: In Loco

shoshannagold
In Loco by Dira Sudis
The O.C., Seth/Ryan (NC-17 - kink)
"Seth is a junkie, and Seth is a hustler."

This piece just knocked me off my feet. It's AU (although judging by the way the series is going, who knows!?) and set in an indeterminate time, but in a universe in which things have gone very wrong for the boys. Seth and Ryan have become the worst possible version of themselves, but in the most perfect way. Seth is all open wounds and selfishness, but with an edge of desperate need that makes him not only forgivable, but perhaps ultimately redeemable. Ryan is hard and tough, but still wary and protective, taking care of Seth in a way that at first seems cruel, but as the story goes on it becomes clear that not only is it necessary, it's actually loving.

"Seth opens and closes his hands, fists clenching, fingers scrabbling, but it doesn't matter, he's held fast, by the rope Ryan tied and by Ryan himself, looking down at Seth impassively. Seth can't do anything to anyone now."

current mood: impressed

Standing in the Common Spaces
by seperis
Smallville/Spider-Man movieverse
NC-17
slash: Peter/Lex, Lex/Clark inklings
Summary: It's instant, like the click of a camera, a moment out of time captured and preserved. Even if he doesn't know why until now.

This is long and *fantastic*. Peter is so well done, and seeing Lex and Clark through his eyes allows for excellent insights into both men. The parallels between Peter and Harry and Lex and Clark are explored beautifully, painfully, wonderfully.

Summary: 'You're good at leading people.'

This Bran makes *sense*; I can really see this as a slice of his future. A scene that's palpably tense and awkward and very well done.

This story made me so happy. So many of my favorite characters (Susan, the Patrician, Death) all together! Susan vs the Patrican was a delight, and I loved the look at Susan's relationship with Time.

A past-time fic that's very, very well done. I was drawn in by the voice, which is *wonderful*, and the sense of foreboding kept me there right til the end.

Title: Wesley's Liberal Guilt
Author: Jessica Harris
Fandom: Angel
Pairing: Wesley/Gunn
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Wesley has Major Issues. Gunn is alternately annoyed and amused.

Wow, it's been a long time. Almost a year, actually. That's sad.

But this is a good fic for me to come back on. It's funny and smart and it has a social conscience (well, kinda), and a very, very English Wesley. And a Gunn who is very . . . Gunn. It's all about Wesley second-guessing himself and Gunn cuffing him upside the head. Literally and figuratively. And then they have sex. The end. :-)

Your Friends and Neighbors by thetreacletart.
Harry Potter. R. Ron/Harry/Hermione.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione move into a new neighborhood. Someone is watching them closely.

I *really* liked this story. All three of the Trio were very well characterized, and the neighbor's characterization was nice and eerie and a very good counterpoint to Harry's. This story has a Twilight-Zone feel, and while I sort of saw the ending coming I couldn't look away until I got there.

Title: The Winter Glass
Author: luminousmarble
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Harry/Ginny
Summary: Harry must read the compass of his heart to solve the only riddle the wizard of the north cannot fathom. How far must one walk to reach eternity? Chamber of Secrets transformed by H.C. Andersen's "The Snow Queen."

The word that comes to mind is 'oooh.' I love this, love the way this story feels, dreamy yet real enough to see. The HP characterizations are strong and true, the canons are blended down to tiny details, and the ending absolutely made my afternoon.

12:01 pm - Ocean's Eleven!

shoshannagold
Title: trading in your own name
Fandom: Ocean's Eleven
Author: Gale
Rating: R
Pairing: Rusty/Linus
Summary: And the most important thing to remember is, don’t ever—

Ocean's Eleven is one of the slashiest movies ever, but for some reason the fandom never took off. Sometimes that happens to movie fandoms, but the news of the sequel stirred new life into the fans, and some great stuff has finally come up. trading in your own name is Linus' pov, and a really great development of that character's back story. The author has an economy of tone that sets off the humour in the story well. The best love stories are those than are told without a surplus of emotion in the prose, that let the characters speak for themselves, and this is a fantastic example of such a story.

Title: Drive
Fandom: Ocean's Eleven
Author: Jess
Rating: I'd say PG-13
Pairing: Rusty/Linus
Summary: " Sometimes he just misses having someone else to change the radio stations and run into the convenience store for drinks. Most of all he just doesn't like being alone."

Everything I said about the last fic applies to this one. Beautiful writing, funny characters, great love story. This is Rusty's pov, and the characterization is amazing. The two stories, though written by different people, fit together so well. These are guys who live just a bit outside the normal bounds of society in a way that is both charming and elegant, and I want more of both of them.

Fandom: Harry Potter
Author: hackthis
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Ron/Neville, Ron/Hermione, Ron/Harry
Summary: If Ron were ever to actually fancy another bloke he’s fairly certain that he would have to fancy Harry.

*snerk* Ron's denial is just priceless, here. He's straight, of course he is, and if he wasn't it would have to be Harry, so why is he with Neville in this broom closet? It's the Ron POV that makes this fic, and it's a joy, sure to leave you smiling.

Title: Remembering Amnesia
Fandom: Angel
Author: untrue_accounts
Rating: R
Pairing: Wesley/Fred, Wesley/Lilah
Summary: Wesley, post-Lineage. He doesn't think car, freeway, north any more than a bird fleeing winter thinks of longitude and latitude.

Wesley takes a trip back to Sunnydale, and it's so lovely and painful and right.

It began here. He thinks it began here. The first time he held a weapon in his hands, and knew what to do with it. The first time he helped save the world. The first time he lost everything, and broke, and put--something together out of the pieces.

11:16 pm - Nothing like a little Sports Night to bring in September.

shoshannagold
Title: The Possibility of a World
Fandom: Sports Night
Author: k (callmesandy)
Rating: R
Pairing: D/C, D/OFC, C/OMC
Summary: Casey leaves Sports Night. Dan finds out why. Angst and unhappiness ensues. Also, world-class blow jobs, music geekiness, Samuel Delany and never enough Shiner Bock.

A friend asked me to track down this story tonight, and after I'd found it, I had to read it again. I just saw a movie with Peter Krause in it today (We Don't Live Here Anymore), and while I enjoyed the film, I realized that I'm never going to see him on the screen without missing Josh Charles beside him. Casey and Danny are the perfect subtextual couple, and while this story isn't the typical SN slash story, it's amazing. Sorkin-fic takes a special touch, and k very definitely has the ear for it. Danny and Casey are done very well, and the story itself is great. I'm usually wary of original characters, but the ones in this story are just right, and the rest of the cast has some lovely moments, too.

Melancholy, sad, beautiful. A Day After Tomorrow challenge-fic, so it's a given there's no happy ending. I love Illyria and Angel here, particularly how Illyria accepts her humanity, at the last.

Title: I Say a Little Prayer
Fandom: Harry Potter
Author: Kaz814
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Ginny/Draco fluff
Summary: Ron wants to find out who his sister fancies and so takes matters into his own hands.

This is a very short, fluffy one-shot, the type of story I usually avoid lest I get cavities, but I found myself giggling so much at Ron that I even felt propelled to rec it. Not much to it but it is a good quick read.

Title: Pigtails
Fandom: Harry Potter
Author: Persnickety
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Summary: “I am completely horrified right now,” Draco responded blandly. “And strangely intrigued...” The ever popular scenario: Veritaserum in the Potions Lab. H/D. Humour.

Funny. That about sums it up.

Title: Seeking Ginny
Fandom: Harry Potter
Author: Casca
Rating: PG
Pairing: Ginny/Harry
Summary: For years, Ginny Weasley has tried to bring to an end to her feelings for Harry Potter-- she's even uprooted her life-- but what happens when it's time to come face to face with him again? A post-Hogwarts tale revolving around Ginny's discovery of herself…while coming to terms with her feelings for Harry.
Warnings: WIP

The awkwardness in this story is so realistic at times that I find myself cringing in sympathy. This is the only Harry/Ginny I have found worth rec'ing.

Title: Temporary Insanity
Fandom: Harry Potter
Author: arbitrary
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Hermione/Draco
Summary: Don't dip your quill in the company ink... I should have known better than to get involved with my boss, but who knew it would lead to me, back on the job market, and Malfoy with a job offer I couldn't refuse? literally.
Warnings: WIP

Hilarious and very well written. The summary makes it seem a tad bit contrived but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Title: Long-hidden Skies
Fandom: Harry Potter
Author: SkoosiePants
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Hermione/Blaise, Ginny/Draco, Ron/Pansy, Harry/Parvati to name a few
Summary: Ten years after the deciding battle of Avignon left the Order nearly broken: Hermione Granger is living as a Muggle, her memories erased and re-written, her only link to what she once was the dreams of a red-haired witch; Ginny Weasley is a pillar of the Order, thrown captive into a Death Eater compound; Draco Malfoy, his status relegated to peon in the Dark Lord’s realm, is a reluctant spy bound by a wizard’s debt; Blaise Zabini is a valued member of the Tribe, a wild band of Animagi who reverted to old magic and fled to the forest. Two halves of a whole, Ginny and Hermione must give to Harry what should never have been theirs to give, and Harry has to end the war, once and for all. A Post-Hogwarts Adventure.
Warnings: WIP

Excellent. I particularly enjoy Lucius in all his insanity.

Title: Parvati Prevails
Fandom: Harry Potter
Author: a_linz
Rating: PG
Pairing: Parvati/Draco
Summary: Your best friend is an utter idiot. Your teachers don’t understand the significance of sporting trendy and exotic hair accessories. Your dream guy is a complete prick, not to mention slightly twisted and evil. Your sister is smart. Really, really smart. And Blaise Zabini wants to beat you up.
But life is still bearable because, after all, you are the prettiest witch in your year.
Oh, no wait. That’s Padma…..
Warnings: WIP

I've really been in the mood for funny stories lately and this one definitely fit the bill. The characterizations are hilarious. Not a parody. I don't think.

Oh my. This story is beautiful, all angst and love and a trio that's oh-so-well characterized. It's gorgeous writing all 'round, but there's one line in particular that still has me meeping quietly, hours after I first read it.
